KNEIP: Mi smo imali 40 000 posjetitelja muzeja u 2015. godini.

No, samo nekoliko kilometara udaljeni gradovi Remich i Mondorf-les-Bains nude smještaj svih vrsta.

Hvala vam velika za ovaj intervju?

KNEIP: Nema na čemu.

Hiking and cycling are the main activities for tourists. Not to forget the huge nature reserve which is also very important…..

Most of my readers the first mention of the word Schengen immediately thought of the Schengen Agreement. However, for the begining, would you present town of Schengen?

Kneip: Schengen is a small village in Luxembourg at the Moselle River in the border triangle of Germany, France and Luxembourg. Schengen is not only famous for the Schengen Agreement but also for its good white wines.

When the Center was established and how about its main mission?

Kneip: The European Center was established in 2005, mainly to receive visitors and hand out brochures about European subjects in general. Since 2010, the year of the 25th anniversary of the Schengen Agreement, a museum was set up in the building to inform aboutborders in genereal, the development, the elements and the consequences of the Schengen Agreement.

So, which countries were the initial signatories of the Schengen Agreement?

Kneip:  The BeNeLux-countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg), Germany and France. The agreement was signed on a cruising ship.

When was signed a second treaty at the same place and who were the signatories?

Kneip: The second treaty was signed in 1990 by the state secretaries of the same 5 countries.

When was open European Museum and what is its permanent exhibition?

Kneip: The museum was inaugurated in 2010 and it explains the beginnings of the European unification, the development of the idea of open borders. We show a collection of European passports as well as a facsimile of the treaty and customs officer service caps of all Schengen countries. In addition to that you find interviews with personalities that were engaged in the process of negotiations as well as historic films etc. You can even create your own « Schengen-Passport » and take home as a souvenir !

What you should say about Schengen Treaty Monument?

Kneip: The Monument of the Schengen Agreement is located at the border of the Moselle river, where the ship MS Princesse Marie-Astrid » was docked during the signing of the Schengen Agreement. The monument  was erected in 1997, two years after the implementation of open borders. It is very symbolic. The material is Cor-Ten-steel, which shows the high importance of steel industry for Luxembourg and to the European project in general. (The European coal and steal community is considered the starting point of the European integration process).  The three pillars with the stars symbolize the 3 partners that signed the Schengen Agreement in 1985 (BeNeLux, Germany, France).

What about The „M 2000” Monument?

Kneip: We have a M2000 Monument in each of the 12 cantons (administrative units) in Luxembourg. This monument reminds us of the importance of « Europe » in Luxembourgish history.

What would you else separated from the overall tourist offer of Schengen?

Kneip: Schengen is a wine region and therefore one of the sunniest villages in Luxembourg. Hiking and cycling are the main activities for tourists. Not to forget the huge nature reserve which is also very important.

How many tourists visited Schengen last year, for example?

Kneip: We had 40 000 visitors to the museum in 2015.

Do you have enough accommodation facilities (hotels, motels) that meet the tourist demand or do you offer accommodation to tourists in neighboring towns and cities?

Kneip: Schengen is a village of 650 inhabitants, the municipality has 4000 inhabitants. There is a wonderful youthhostel and a camping, but no hotels. But only a few kilometers away the towns of Remich and Mondorf-les-Bains offer accommodation of all kind.

Thank you so much for this interview.

Kneip: You are welcome ☺
