Kako ste organizirani i u kojim zemljama djelujete?

Provodimo do dvadeset projekata u različitim zemljama širom svijeta istovremeno. Ovih dana smo veoma fokusirani na izbjeglice u povodu migrantske krize djelujući u Libanu, Srbiji i Italiji. U oblasti razvoja suradnje djelujemo u Etiopiji, Brazilu, Indiji, Kosovu, Nigeru, Šri Lanci itd.

Kako postati vaš donator i sponzor?

“Moraš udarati u tamu dok krvari dnevna svjetlost”.

RICHTER: Molim.

When was your organization founded and what its core mission?

RICHTER: Humedica e. V is an international non-governmental organisation based in Kaufbeuren, Germany (Bavaria). Since 1979 humedica has been active in the field of humanitarian work with a focus on medical aid, operating projects in 90 countries around the world.

Thanks to an honorary team of highly qualified physicians, we are able to dispatch our teams on very short notice for highly efficient emergency and disaster relief operations. This commitment is complemented by medium- to long-term relief projects in the sector of development cooperation. Over 500 medical professionals have volunteered to register for the humedica database. In addition, there are about 70 coordinators. As members of a voluntary team, all of them are willing and prepared to offer immediate help all over the world.

At our headquarters in Kaufbeuren, we have approximately 40 full-time staff members and at times more than two hundred men and women are doing voluntary work. Furthermore, humedica receives support on a global level from volunteers, as well as local employees in the project countries.

The objective of our international activities is to render aid to people in misery by implementing purposeful relief measures and by taking advantage of all means at our disposal.

Humedica perceives itself as an international community of full-time and voluntary employees, donators and patrons who by their means, abilities and talents put themselves into service for the assistance for people who are in distress from disaster or structural poverty.

In the process Humedica acts as intermediary between the affected parties and helpful people and institutions by pointing out concrete states of emergencies, activating resources and providing effective as well as efficient assistance.

How are you organized, and in which countries do you operate?

RICHTER:Humedica is a registered association with about 70 employees in several international places.

We are running up to twenty projects in different countries worldwide at once. These days we are very much focused on refugee relief due to the migrant crisis working in Lebanon, Serbia and Italy as well. In the field of development cooperation we are operating in Ethiopia, Brazil, India, Kosova, Niger, Sri Lanka, e. g.

What are the forms of your assistance to those in need of assistance?

RICHTER:Our assistance is covering all kind of medical support in case of emergency aid. Afterwards our action is concentrated on tasks like rebuilding, reconstruction, individual support, distribution of relief supplies.

Do you work as a volunteers and how many people work for your entire Organization?

RICHTER: No, we are full professionals, about 70 employees worldwide as mentioned before. Nevertheless our emergency aid is realized by volunteers. We have about 600 people located mainly in Germany but a few also all over Europe stored in a special database, most of them are medical professionals.

humedica

For your work you need donor's and sponsor's support. How to become your donor and sponsor?

RICHTER:Basically we are operating without any kind of typical marketing tools. Our strategy is based on the principle of embedded journalism. Most or our operations are accompanied by Journalists who belong to a network we are cultivating over years now. Even though these guys are covering all of their costs by themselves in the field they are pretty much focused on what we are doing. As a result we are part of news coverage over the most important first phase after a catastrophe. This circumstance is compensating the largely lack of any marketing action.

We are witnessing a large migrant crisis, which lasts a few months and its uncertain end. How do you help migrants during their ways – from Turkey and Greece to Germany and Scandinavian countries?

RICHTER:We are providing medical relief in more than 30 camps in Lebanon and along the route in Serbia, too. We are also supporting local organizations on the island of Sicily/Italy.

What are the problems encountered by your activists in helping migrants from the Middle East? In which countries of their way to Western European countries these problems are greatest?

RICHTER: Well, what can I say? This is a painful subject beyond all borders. At this point I’d like to quote the great Canadian songwriter Bruce Cockburn who wrote in the early Eighties this wise line:

“You gotta kick at the darkness til’ it bleeds daylight”. That is exactly what it is all about concerning our daily situation in Lebanon and especially Serbia these days.

During last fall one of our coordinators stated that “we are crying while working”. All of our teams involved in this refugee relief are confronted with thousands of desperate and of course exhausted people, who are very much shaped by the time of horror and suffering they experienced.

humedica-1

I think the biggest problems all over Europe are fear, prejudices, lack of plan, integration and even understanding, the political attitude in many countries, not least emerging right wing radicalism.

There are pressures on Chancellor Angela Merkel to close the door to refugees from the Middle East. This could cause a number of problems in many countries, and the migrants themselves. How would you comment on that announcements and would you be willing to answer such a scenario – the possible deterioration of the migrant crisis?

RICHTER:I’d like to appeal to your understanding that I will not communicate further comments on the current political situation due to the fact that we a non-governmental organization. Our mission is focused on any kind of relief operations, politicking excluded. Sorry.

Do you communicate with the authorities of the countries where you operate and whether you are having the support of some of them?

RICHTER:There’s ongoing communication with all authorities involved. More often than not they are willing to find solutions. No doubt it’s a long and winding road but we should never forget that the challenges are enormous.

At the very least, whether it cooperates with NGOs in the Western Balkan countries in the course of the migrant crisis and that, possibly?

RICHTER: Guess this answer is not to your satisfaction but I can tell you nothing else: We have to wait what the near future holds.

Thank you very much for this interview.

RICHTER: Welcome.
